I want to quit smoking. I’ve tried several times before but the longest I’ve ever lasted was 1 week. My husband has agreed to quit with me but the last time we tried that we nearly killed each other. I know there is no easy way but some tips would be appreciated. How did you manage to quit? I know the nicotine is out of your system in just a few days but does the desire to smoke ever go away?

No patch.
No gum.
No pills.

I just said to myself I am putting them down. I never smoked again. The way I see it – Lie to yourself, and you are nothing anymore. I have not smoked since that day 8 years ago.

Everyone is a bit different as far as discipline goes. Good luck. I hope you quit!

I sort of unconsciously picked up smoking during a stressful point in my life, and I realize now that it’s stupid and I’ve gotten rid of my cigarettes and I’m starting tomorrow to quit. During this past month I’ve smoked somewhere between 5 and 7 cigarettes a day. I have never felt addicted, necessarily, but I know I could be once I stop. I’m just wondering how hard it’s going to be, and how long the crappy feelings are going to last. Basically, I need some motivation and reassurance.

motivation:
your health, your looks, your smell, social exclusion

reassurance:
The longer you wait, the tougher it will be. If you’re apprehensive now, it’ll only be worse later.

Good Luck!

What is the most effective/successful way to quit smoking? I’ve been cutting down little by little. Is that the best way or should I just quit cold turkey and force myself to not smoke through sheer willpower?
I don’t use the patch or gum because I don’t believe in using crutches like that.

mattyboymma, Smoking addiction can be extremely serious. Many everyday people have lost jobs, homes, family, friends, and loved ones simply because they could not break thier smoking habit. I recommend you seek some help. I found a site that has addiction information and a directory of addiction treatment clinics so you can help. http://www.addictionselfhelp.com

I have been smoking cigarettes in social situations or when I’ve been stressed since I was 15 years old, now 21. On average I probably smoke two or three packs of cigarettes every six months. I love to smoke, and it helps me de-stress so much listening to music and having a cigarette in the car on the way home from school. Everybody knows they are terrible for you, and they cause an array of cancers. How do I stop doing this? How did you quit smoking?

If you can just quit, for the love of God, do it! I am you in 22 years if you don’t. I was dx’d w/cancer 6 years ago, and even *that* wasn’t enough to make me quit! I just finally quit with Chantix 67 days ago, but I’m telling you it is MISERABLE! I still crave a cigarette several times a day – night time being the worst. The chemicals are all out of my body now, so all that is left is the worst of it – the psychological addiction! My mind is a scary, scary place to be left alone!

If you are smoking 60 cigs in 180 days, you can put them down. Do it, if for no other reason than quitting when you smoke 30 a day is REALLY HARD!!!!

Good luck!

I quit smoking in 1971. Except for a few cigars I haven’t smoked since and my last cigar was in 1977. Have you quit or are you trying to kick the habit? I quit cold turkey without a support group or any kind of medicine or other aid. Once I firmly decided to quit I had no trouble staying quit, but I did backslide several times on the way to successfully quitting. I never doubted I could kick the habit, though it was not easy to quit after years as a smoker.
Between my first serious attempt to quit smoking and my final successful attempt there was a span of six years and probably four or five tries to quit. It was not easy, and the hardest part was being around other people who smoked. In one of those tries I was smoke-free for nearly three years before I backslid into the habit. So I respect anyone who has tried–failed or succeeded–and I fully sympathize with those who have the habit and want to quit.

Great answers, everyone. Thanks for participating. If you’ve quit, congratulations. If you’ve tried and failed, I respect your efforts and wish you the best.

The cost is one factor that helps me stay quit. When I last smoked cigarettes cost about 40 cents a pack.

Hi warren..

congrats on that time its impressive.. i have been free for over 5 years now.. after smoking for more than 40 years.. the thing that worked for me was a support group..

the biggest challenge, was to become convinced, i couldent smoke just one..

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

I’ve never felt so weak in my entire life. I want to quit smoking so badly but every time I try I only find myself obsessing on wanting a cigarette. My roommates smoke, my friends smoke and it seems like we all want to quit but end up caving for one reason or another. Does anyone have any advice that could help me?

I understand your pain. Its all about standing up for yourself. Like high schoolers, its like giving in to peer pressure, but on yourself.

I have been addicted to many things and cigarettes were the worst. If you’re a cold-turkey kind of person, try that and see how it goes. If not, bum when you are drinking alcohol ONLY (social smoker) and limit yourself to only 1 or 2 per social-smoking nites.

Here is how I did it:
1. Do NOT buy a pack of smokes. If you have them, you will smoke them. Bumming from friends and strangers constantly gets old quickly and they will eventually be annoyed.

2. Don’t even think about it. The more you think about it, the more you want one. When you think of smoking one, think about how your throat feels right then, think about gross crap like mucus and phlegm and tar… ew.

3. My boyfriend helped. He quit smoking and stayed strong while the rest of us continued. Every time I would smoke he would be very, very, very upset. He is worth more to me than smoking cigarettes.

4. Buy lots of gum.

5. When you quit, realize that it will take a long, long, long time to not want one… but even then, even my 80 year old grandmother still has dreams about wanting cigarettes and she quit 20 years ago.

6. When you do quit, you will feel ill, you will feel tired and down and cranky and pissed off and crazy. This will pass. Do not give in!

7. This next one is entirely dependent on your personality…. if you like the social habit part of things, partake in the social habit part. If it is too difficult for you to stay social without wanting to bum, then don’t partake. You may lose friends over it, but what kind of friends are those?

8. Sooner or later you won’t feel like the only one not smoking… my group of friends quit one by one… and the last one standing outside smoking felt very alone.

You can do it! You can do anything…. trust yourself.

I have been trying to quit smoking for months now and I always manage to buy cigarettes. I keep making excuses for myself which leads me to buy them and I always feel left out from a group of people who are smoking and I’m not. I have the gum and went one week without buying cigarettes but I still scabbed smokes. I really want to quit for my healths sake.

Stop thinking that quitting is a difficult thing, we have an anti-smoking culture so people think of smokers as a great evil rather than victims of an addiction, this culture effects how we approach quitting. People think that if smokers continue to suffer in order to smoke that they must enjoy smoking thus quitting will deprive them of something so will be difficult, when logically the fact smokers suffer should make quitting easier. Did you know there are laws in place so methods that don’t require willpower are restricted, being told constantly that you need willpower and quitting is difficult you believe it too and that is hardly motivation to quit!

I seriously recommend EASYWAY it has a 90% success rate and once quit very few start smoking again, there is no weight gain, no moodyness, and no feeling deprived. Easyway is easy as there is no willpower required, instead it helps you understand the nature of the addition to overcome it and feel positive from day one. It deals with the mental addition rather than the chemical, after all smokers can go all night without being woken up by cravings, nicotine may be highly addictive but the cravings and withdrawals are minute, it’s all mental. A lot of it is common sense that the addiction cancels out, sure you know smoking will kill you horribly and costs you a fortune but you still continue, that darn addiction is overriding your own brain. Easyway gets rid of the addictions grasp on your logic and deprograms the brainwashing about quitting being difficult or social dependancy on having a cigarette in your hand, then you quit successfully and happily without any ill effects. The course comes in different forms, you can get a book from Amazon for practically nothing, I tend to buy copies for £3-£4 to give away, the books also give you 20% discount off the clinics. The clinics offer the same information but more support, they are £220 but you can go as often as you need and they offer a full money back guarentee. http://www.allencarrseasyway.com

There are of course other methods, tips to help you quit, most are about as much use as, well, as continuing to smoke is to your health. Some methods work for some people and not others, but with the right attitude anything can work. If you go cold turkey try drinking coffee which feeds the caffeine addiction so takes the edge off the nicotine addiction, the bitterness also puts your off smoking, and coffee helps clear what will be coming off your lungs. Bitterness of range juice and dark chocolate can also put you off smoking, don’t use lollipops as although they keep your mouth busy it’s positive reinforcement – your body is craving nicotine so you are rewarding it with candy. Avoid quitting with friends as if one fails then it gives you an excuse to give up too, but by all means find a support group. If you find yourself laying in bed reflexting on how much you want to quit get up and write it down as in the morning you’ll forget those thoughts. There is a mouthwash you can use which is like the bad tasting nail polish used to stop biting nails, it’s sprayed onto your tounge to make cigarettes taste horrible, but it makes everything else taste horrible too. Herbal cigarettes totally help as they keep your hands and mouth busy, the problem is that you can’t smell them but everyone else can, they don’t smell nice, so use them when you’re alone. There is nicotine replacement, lozenges, patches, gum, inhalator, these are expensive but if you live in the UK you can get them free on the NHS as long as you go along to smoking clinics that monitor your progress – if you fail you have to wait six months before you can try again. You can also get drugs like Zyban, again free on the NHS, these drugs act on your brain to stop cravings, you start them a few weeks before you want to quit. My friends parents used a similar drug to Zyban and were so disgusted by cigarettes that his father threw up at the mere smell of his cigarette tin.
